I was born with the smell of emulsifiable oil in my nostrils and the sound of steel being drawn ringing in my ears. Still today, though not an engineer myself, I observe with great satisfaction the perfectly formed iridescent slivers of steel lying in the bin beneath a worker’s station. To watch a skilled worker as he raises a tube to face the light and examines its interior, observing its perfect sheen, reminds me of a gesture that I too have repeated for over 60 years.
